Interstellar interferometry: precise curvature measurement from pulsar secondary spectra

چکیده

ABSTRACT The parabolic structure of the secondary or conjugate spectra pulsars is often result isolated one-dimensional (or at least highly anisotropic) lenses in interstellar medium (ISM). curvature these features contains information about velocities Earth, ISM, and pulsar along primary axis lens. As a result, measuring variations over course year, orbital period for binaries, can constrain properties screen pulsar. In particular, distance inclination binary systems be found multiple screens with prior on sin(i). By mapping into space where main arc inverted arclets are straight lines, we able to make use full content from arclet curvatures, amplitudes, phases using eigenvectors uniquely optimally retrieve phase information. This allows higher precision measurement than standard Hough transform available. Our technique also directly yields best-fitting impulse response function lens given terms Doppler shift, time delay, magnification images sky as seen single observatory. extended holographic imaging by combining telescopes. We present examples this new method both simulated data actual observations PSR B0834+06.

Interpretation of parabolic arcs in pulsar secondary spectra

Pulsar dynamic spectra sometimes show organised interference patterns; these patterns have been shown to have power spectra which often take the form of parabolic arcs, or sequences of inverted parabolic arclets whose apexes themselves follow a parabolic locus. Here we consider the interpretation of these arc and arclet features. We give a statistical formulation for the appearance of the power...

Measurement of the gravity-field curvature by atom interferometry.

We present the first direct measurement of the gravity-field curvature based on three conjugated atom interferometers. Three atomic clouds launched in the vertical direction are simultaneously interrogated by the same atom interferometry sequence and used to probe the gravity field at three equally spaced positions. The vertical component of the gravity-field curvature generated by nearby sourc...

Reviewing Pulsar Spectra

Pulsar research must be considered 35 years after the detection of pulsars a mature science, where the basic questions have been raised and discussed. One would hope that many if not all generic and important problems have found some kind of answer and that scientific work can concentrate now on specific details requiring more in depth investigation. We know, however, that this picture is not t...

Pulsar Timing and Spacetime Curvature

We analyze the effect of weak field gravitational waves on the timing of pulsars, with particular attention to gauge invariance, that is, to the effects that are independent of the choice of coordinates. We find: (i) the Doppler shift cannot be separated into gauge invariant gravitational wave and kinetic contributions; (ii) a gauge invariant separation can be made for the time derivative of th...
